Atwill Palmer
Almshouses
Refurbishment and remodelling of 24 Almshouse apartments.
Project Summary
Between January 2019 and July 2020, Fifields Construction delivered a large-scale construction project at the Atwill Palmer Almshouses, Exeter. The project was delivered in conjunction with Russ Palmer Architects for the Exeter Homes Trust.
The project involved the upgrade and restoration of 24 Grade II listed 19th century Almshouse flats, with new two-storey extensions added to the rear of the building.
The works comprised the demolition of the flat roofed 1960's one storey additions at the rear, replacing them with energy efficient two-floor extensions, with pitched roofs. Extensive groundworks were undertaken to supply new incoming services with external remodelling and new landscaped terraces and gardens.
The new rear extensions are comprised of steel beams fixed to external blockwork, with double pitched roofs and mono pitched roofs to the ground floor extensions.
Internally, the works included refurbishment to the existing buildings, new rendering to the extensions with glazing, floor finishes and decorations throughout. New mechanical and electrical services have been provided with underfloor heating, modern shower rooms, ensuite toilets and kitchens.
The end result has left the residents with modern, energy efficient housing, upgrading the apartments, whilst retaining the distinctive character of a building with historical importance.
